We wanted to find a solution in everyday life that allows adults with children to have a cultural experience with less stress and added value. By trying to introduce children to the world of art in a playful way, we wanted to give children their own task but also create a shared experience with the parents.
The Artmap is a physical portable tablet in plywood with figures in acrylic plastic. The tablet is 230 x 150 mm and 30 mm thick with rounded corners and handles. We chose a format, similar to an iPad in size, that is comfortable for a child to carry and interact with.
Target group was children 5-7 years old. The tablet guides the children with light, sound and vibrations to different taskstations next to various artwork in a museum. The children stop and execute a task while the parent can look at the artwork. It’s adapted to Konsthallens floor plan and is therefore suitable for different exhibitions. The ArtMap is a helpful way to make the visit in a museum more pleasant for both parties. It will give the child a way to experience art with guidance in the stroll and to approach specific artworks. The child gets a task of their own connected to the artwork, and after the exhibition, both children and adults have a shared experience.
